My Danny Matts

Well tonight is my 47th Birthday, wow I'm getting old! Grumps and I were supposed to go fishing at Seawolf Park for a night of speckle trout fishing under the lights however, the weather was not right winds were blowing to hard out of the Southwest and I need a Southeast wind to clear the bay water. And with my very personal problem,my mind would not have been good on the trip either. My children called me today Joey and Sarah, wished me a Happy Birthday, and for that I'm very grateful. My children, and their spouses, and now my Danny Matts, are the reason I live and work every day. My wonderful daughter-in-law Tania, is doing great early stages of her pregnancy, I wish her the best over the next few months I know she will be an outstanding mom. Right now, I getting ready to embark on very hard trip with Grumps, and next week will be the most intense period since my time in the 1st Gulf war, right now I feel like at Defcon 4 the start of nuclear war, my spirit is high and systems are ready for the start of the war. I want everyone to know I not the type to start a war but I will bring one back to anyone who wants to hurt me. Until my next blog Have a Great month and those fishing lines tight.

Cory Martin Cruz, aka "the monk"

I wanted everyone to see Cory, aka "the monk" he is my youngest son. Cory, is a great fisherman, and loves the outdoors. Last, year for his part of summer vacation with me, monk, grumps and I went fishing two nights at Seawolf Park, Galveston, Texas. The monk caught his fair share of sand trout. Cory, is the reason, I have been traveling to North Carolina, all these past months. I know soon monk and I will be reunited again, but I will have to wait for that day to come. I have to tell a funny story, about the monk and I. About 5 years ago, Cory and I went hiking near Kerr Lake, North Carolina, as we were hiking along a creek we came to spot where a ton of carp were schooling in pool in a feeder stream leading into the lake, the monk, got so excited and said, Dad, lets go get the fishing rods and catch some fish, I had to break his heart and let him know, Dad, really does not like to eat carp, but his smile and excitement at the moment will always live in my heart. Grumps and I tried another fishing trip two weeks ago again with no luck, old man winter will not give into the spring, so another bad trip of fishing. We did manage to catch some sun fish but not single crappie or catfish. I will heading to Seawolf park next Saturday night in search of specks, and hopefully a big black drum, the forecast is still to far out for me to say this trip is a go, but I will have another post soon and let everyone know how it progresses. I want to wish every one a Happy Easter and to remember why we celebrate The Easter season.

Fishing/Danny Matt/Fishing Show/Hockey/Back to North Carolina

Hello, everyone sorry, has it been a crazy few weeks around here since my last post. Grumps and I tried to fish early for some white bass on the San Jacinto river 2 weeks ago but no luck, the wind would not stop blowing out of the north all day. We did head up river to Stubbyfield lake where the river backs into lake Conroe, but no luck there either. Not a single strike all day. We there the day a boy got lost near the river, what a rough area, but lucky the boy was found the next day. The next weekend was miss as well but for a great reason, my grandson, Danny Matt was in town for about week with my daughter, Sarah, and boy do I have a good looking grandson, I now know how good looking I was as baby, just joking Donald, no Danny Matt looks just like his Dad. Sarah, is doing an outstanding job in taking care of my grandson, and his dad helps a lot as well. The fishing show was in town last weekend, and Grumps and stocked up on some great new rigs for specks and redfish for this up coming season. Joey, my oldest son, is interested in fishing so, being the good dad, that I'm I bought him, a new Darwa fishing combo. I will teach him everything he needs to know. The weather was looking good for a fishing trip in the earlier part of the week, but mother nature said, just one more taste of winter before spring. A major cold front blew in on Thursday night just killed any idea of fishing anywhere. Good News!! Seawolf Park Fishing Pier is back open!!! The only fishing pier open on Galveston Island, since Ike,Watch out fish Grumps, Joey, and I will be soon stalking you there. Grumps, Joey,Donald, and I had a chance to watch my nephew Taylor, and his honor guard team present the colors at the Aeros, hockey game on Friday night, and boy did he do a great job, just before the game started a couple, behind were asked if they would like to upgrade to the best seats in the house, the guy, stated, and I quote," I really don't like hockey, but I'm here for my sister", I jumped and said, I love hockey, so all four us were lead, down to ice next the players box, for the duration of the game, Joey, and Donald were seen on the Jumbo Tron, screen, and we could bang on the plastic shield, all night, Grumps bought a round of beers, what a night, live on the ice. Now, the not so good news in my life. I will be leaving on the 18th of March to start looking for Cory, my youngest son. I will be back in North Carolina, again, I hope and pray I will be getting closer to bring him back home. This trip is going to be totally business, I will be asking everyone I can find if they know where his mother and he are now at. The only thing that keeps me going is my family and the backing have here in Houston, when I'm up there. I know if anything happens to me. My family will ensure that Cory we be taking care of. Well I have a long week a head of me, so I want to close my blog with this thought. If your family is always behind you are never alone. I want to wish every one the best in there week. Grandpa Cruz

Thoughts for 2009 Fishing and Hunting

Well, tonight is another bite of winter is still in the air, Grumps and I head to the San Jacinto River, in the morning for our 1st fishing trip of the season. My life has never been easy, full of hard work, and some great disappointments. However, I still thank God, for my wonderful life. My escape mechanism in life is not though some drink or drug but rather my love of the outdoors and of my children Joey Sarah, Cory, Tania and Donald and now my grandson, Danny Matt, are the the ones in my thoughts as I fish and hunt. I can not give my kids or grandson, money, but I can give them my time and share of the catch or kill of the day and a great story of the pursuit. My personal life in relationships has never been very successful but, my relationship with mother nature is of a permanent bond. I may grow old without a spouse or significant other yet I will always have my children and grandchildren, and the outdoors. As watch the river run and the sky move over head tomorrow I will be thinking and thanking God how wonderful it is to be alive. I know many people, can do far more in the outdoors, than I can yet I bet no one loves the thrill of fishing or hunting more than I do.

What a winter season, Almost Over!

Well, winter is almost over, and the fishing season will be starting soon. I'm sorry, my blog has been on the back burner, over the last few weeks, alot is going on in my personal life. A lot of my followers to my blog know I have a young son that lives in North Carolina, and his mother, has not allowed me any contact with him since 13 July 2008. I have been traveling to Louisburg, North Carolina, in appeal to reestablish contact with him. I know another trip is now in the planning stage. Grumps, and I will be working on my mothers yard and his yard boy, you know know we are having lots of fun with that. I bought 2 new reels a few weeks ago at the Base Exchange at Lackland AFB, my basic training base, and my 1st duty station at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. My reels were a great steal at only $9.99 each regular price for the same reels are about $18.00 dollars here in Houston. As you can tell my Danny Matt is getting bigger and bigger, soon he will be fishing and hunting with his Grandpa Cruz.
Grumps will be hitting the 69 this week on the 25th of February, but he is still in better shape than I'm. Grumps and I will be gearing up this weekend and next week getting ready for some white bass and catfish, next Sunday, finally getting back to the great outdoors I love so much. Grumps is ready because he is getting so tired of me braggin shooting my doe at 300 yards, that my yarn, needs to get replaced with good fishing tale. No way will ever stop telling my tale of my shot. I will post pictures soon of Falls Lake North Carolina, where I caught many a catfish. and I will have picture of my old hunting zones too. Well every take I will post soon.

Back Home From North Carolina

Well, my trip to North Carolina, was not a great trip, yes, I was able to visit old friends, and see the snow on the ground on my old hunting and fishing grounds, but the main purpose of my personal business trip was a complete and utter failure but not on my part but on a small technicality on the deal. I will return back to the North Carolina, on February 4,2009 to try to complete my business. I was able to study on Catfishing, and Crappie for the up coming spring season during my off time there. Grumps and I spent the day cutting down another tree off the neighbors fence and course it was the usual Grumps and Grandpa Cruz discussions during the whole time, for example, I told, Grumps, if I make one cut on the notch the tree is going to come down and sure enough, the tree did come down and almost hit me, good going Grumps. Well we will spend most tomorrow taking the tree to landfill. I want to thank everyone that reads my blog, I know right I have nothing to report on hunting and fishing, but my blog is intended to show what the budget minded hunter and fisherman are doing on weekly basis. I do want add a plug, for a bait shop in Spring, Texas off I-45 and the Louetta exit, once you exit the Louetta exit just Spring High School, you stay on the feeder go past and under Louetta road and just as past the Exxon on your right go through the intersection you will see the old bait shop, the guy there is very nice and unique in his own way but he has the best bait in the area and the entrance ramp is easy to get on but remember he only takes cash. I hope to have more next week. til then my all have a Good Week and God Bless America and your family.

A True Hunting Tale:Bigfoot in the Sam Houston National Forest

As I'm starting a new hunting tale of Bigfoot in the Sam Houston National Forest, Grumps is forming camo patterns out of cardboard in my mom's living room (dad's ex-wife) for the "Cat-Monk" our jon boat. This winter's night is cold. The moon is full and bright across a bright starry night. I'm thinking back on one my great hunting adventures of this past year and how often a hunting tale becomes a hunting tale. This hunting tale is really true. Believe me I would not lie or pretend to makeup this hunting tale. It was the 3rd weekend of our 2008 deer hunting season, Grumps and I had hiked down the road to deer* And as we got closer to our hunting area, we heard a horrible screaming almost a type of howling of an animal like neither Grumps or I had ever heard before. The coyotes in the hunting area were going crazy with their own howling and yelping. The screams of this animal sound like it was in pain or anguish, Grumps said, it might be bobcat or wild hog perhaps even a cougar trapped by the coyotes. Yet, I was thinking could it be the legendary Texas Bigfoot? Believe me, I would have never thought a Bigfoot could be sited or heard in Texas but if you go to this online web site you find that a Bigfoot type of creature has been seen in the Sam Houston National Forest. http://www.texasbigfoot.org/. Well, I started to setup my portable camo blind in a downed pine tree, and this howling and screaming continued, over and over again, you need to remember for a moment its 4:oo a.m. in the pitch dark and Grumps is going to leave to his own hunting area and soon I would be left all alone. Grumps assured me that nothing would attack me, "yeah right", I said, to myself, but I had my Sako Tikka .270 wsm and my Ka-bar military knife on my side, I knew, I was fully armed to the teeth but what if my weapons were not enough to protect me from what was screaming and howling. Grumps, asked me if was going to be ok, and course I said, "yes, Dad, I will be alright". After I said, a quick prayer, and asking God to protect me, I felt much better. The howling and screaming continued for about another 45 minutes and finally it stopped just before day break. Later that day during our mid-day lunch break, Grumps and I talked what had happened that early morning we continued to speculate what it was or was not. Grumps and I never really spoke about this again until a few weeks later, when we had scouting trip prior to last 2 hunts of the season that we finally stopped and had a chance to speak to the forest ranger and the head biologist of the Sam Houston National Forest, the biologist kinda joked and laughed with us and told us not worry that sometimes Bigfoot hunters would leave recordings of primates near camera traps to try to lure a Bigfoot near. The biologist also said, it could have been trappers trying to lure in the coyotes. Grumps and I both said, that it was the most logical answers to the question of the howling and screaming of that early morning. But now what if, there were no Bigfoot hunters in the area or any trappers? We did not see anyone walking down on the road to deer* that day or morning. Now just for think for a moment If was a really a Bigfoot!

Happy New 2009 New Year of Fishing and Hunting:

White Bass (Morone chrysops)

Happy New Years!

White Bass Fishing:
As Grumps and I settle in for few months of chores and boredom during the cold months. I wanted to let everyone know Danny Matt was here last week and boy do I have a wonderful grandson!! Sorry, to say I don't have any pictures of my grandson but soon I will. My daughter Sarah, and her husband Donald are doing an outstanding job and I want to salute them on being great new parents. My son Joey and his wife Tania, are doing great as well this New Year, Joey and Tania moved to brand new loft apartment. It's a little premature of me but hopefully my youngest son Cory aka "the Monk" may be here with me soon in Texas but if not I know I will be spending more time with him this year, the monk is great fisherman too. The fish above know as the Texas White Bass, Grumps, and I will soon be plotting to add this fish to roster of game for the up coming spring. I hope we can catch a good run, last year we were a little late getting started to catch this wonderful and tasty game fish. Grumps, has a river front lot on the San Jancinto River between Conroe, and the Woodlands, the lot is not very pretty but we do have our own private access to the river. The bait of choice will be minnows and small spinner baits. We will be using light tackle and may even simple cane poles.there is a spot on the river where they should be schooling. We are still in the process of building a crossbow to hunt wild hogs, too. Our jon boat named the " The Cat-Monk will be another winter project for us to keep us busy. I want to wish everyone the Best for 2009 for Fishing and Hunting.
